When astrologers mention oppositions, it means a hard aspect: describing the tension between two different ways of being in the world, or thinking about life.. Though not as hard an aspect as a Square (90 degrees), an opposition (180 degrees) can lead to considerable conflict.
Presently, Jupiter's transit through Cancer opposes the Capricorn Sun, Venus and Pluto stellium. *(See Jan 1/13/14 Post) This opposition causes considerable tension in general, in spite of the fact that earth and water signs are generally more calming than air and fire.
Oppositions symbolize, for example, wealth versus poverty. It is difficult for someone who has never been without the support of family and money, to understand the stress and physical toll of being poor. (As illustrated by Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, it is far easier to achieve success if you have a roof over your head, food on the table, and no reason to be concerned about losing this security. Those who are sheltered and safe are far more likely to self-actualize.) This can make people insensitive and/or indifferent.
This is one kind of opposition: between Capricorn and Cancer, or Virgo and Pisces, for instance.
Capricorn versus Cancer is like the US political system, dominated by two parties:
Republicans and Democrats. In a perfect world, Republicans are more conservative and concerned about fiscal responsibility whereas Democrats are traditionally inclined to be more open-minded and concerned about equalizing income inequality.
Domestic abuse and the escalation of conflict can arise because an astrological opposition doesn't reveal compromise. Simmering conflict can become outright battle when one partner wants control and the other needs freedom. This can lead not only to a partner seeking company elsewhere just to feel less controlled, but to rising anger on the part of the controller that can become abuse..
The main thing to keep in mind when you read about oppositions is that they begin as simple tension but are not to be taken lightly. It helps to be informed of the charts of those close, as well as of transiting oppositions.
Wherever there is an opposition in your life ( between your chart and another's or transits of your own chart), you can usually feel it if you don't recognize it spot on. It requires reflection and empathy. If we can't put ourselves "in the other person's shoes," it's difficult to resolve.
Empathizing (more effective than sympathizing) takes work since it requires responding to travails and ways of living you yourself may have no knowledge of.
Currently, we have been experiencing a wide Grand Cross in Cardinal signs: This means more than one opposition. The main one that has dominated the sky (as I've mentioned in posts of the past two weeks) has been Capricorn (ruled by Saturn) vs Cancer (ruled by the Moon): reason vs heart, with the Capricorn stellium predominant; the other is refined, gentle Libra (ruled by Venus, Love) vs Aries (ruled by the warrior Mars).
